Out of the Convents and Into the Movie Theaters
EXTRAMUROS, 198?
Miguel Picazo's heavy-handed "Extramuros" has it all: fake stigmatas, lesbian nuns, self-flagellation, frenzied ambition. Carmen Maura and Mercedes Sampietro (pictured here) play amorous sisters behind the walls of a convent festering with intrigue.
I, THE WORST OF ALL
Based on Octavio Paz's book THE TRAPS OF FAITH, Maria Luisa Bemberg's film recounts the story of 17th century Mexican poet Sister Juana Ines de la
Cruz, one of the greatest poets in the Spanish language. To pursue her
passion to write, Juana (Assumpta Serna) enters the convent. There she
develops an intimate friendship with the vicerine (Dominique Sanda), who
becomes Juana's muse of inspiration.
